In 2013, when I was living in the UAE, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Overnight my life was turned upside down, not least because I had to leave my home of seven years, my children until they had finished their exams, friends, and a career that I loved, to return to the UK for treatment. I was lucky – the treatment was curative, but the emotional impact was longer lasting. Losing my identity and trying to forge a new one were much harder than I could ever have anticipated.
