View from a Broad: the Middle East years

I am a writer, editor and blogger. View From A Broad is an account of my expat years – the years I spent living and working in the Middle East. Names have been fiddled with to avoid offence but most of what you’ll read here is true. I love being back in the UK, but harbour a hope that I’ll live abroad again before I’m of pensionable age.

Background

In 2006, my family – a family of Simpsons – from the East of England moved to the Middle East and had a ridiculous number of adventures. View From A Broad is an account of these exploits, the good, the bad and the ugly. I am a travel features and copywriter; currently a freelance contributor to Waitrose Weekend, copy editor for Little, Brown Books, and the author of  View From A Broad: The Blog. I have completed my first novel Splintered Lives and am in the process of editing it before submitting it to agents for representation.  You can find more information about me here, and examples of my writing (which tends to focus on travel, culture, wellbeing, mental health, family, parenting, and the people behind a story) here.

Moving abroad, for work, for life, alone, with a partner, with children… is both a privilege and a challenge. Whilst I have changed names where necessary, everything in this blog, is factual. My opinions and experiences are personal, but will, I hope, resonate with the many who embrace expat life; especially the wives who support their husbands wholeheartedly on their career move, but are left to their own devices to find their way, carve out a new identity, make new friends, be their children’s anchor and act as the linchpin for a stable and happy family life.

For the purposes of this story-in-parts, and to allow a little distance from me, the Mr, and the three mini Simpsons (boy, girl, girl), we will, for this blog, be referred to as Marge, Homer, Bart, Lisa and Maggie – our Springfield counterparts. When we moved across the world, this Marge and Homer were in their forties, Bart was 13, Lisa was 10 and Maggie was four.
